Description

Keith Haring's art places a lot of impact on shape and colour. This lesson enables learners to see the imact of colour within an artwork.

Objective

Students will distinguish between primary and secondary (grade 2) or warm and cool (grade 3) colours.

Materials

Black cardboard strips
Multiple copies of Keith Haring colouring pages
Colored markers

Procedure

STEP 1
Ask students to finde ONE fact about Keith Haring for homework.

STEP 2
Brainstorm facts found (create a mind map or web of Keith Haring facts).

STEP 3
Show some samples of his work, discuss the impact of colour in the artworks.

STEP 4
Review primary and secondary (and/or warm and cool) colours with students.

STEP 5
Tell students that they will choose ONE Keith Haring colouring design to colour in, but that they will need to colour THREE copies of the artwork:
1) Primary (or warm) colours
2) Secondary (or cool) colours
3) Student choice of three colours (combined from previous schemes)

STEP 6
Students colour and paste three versions onto black background, place labels for their different color schemes below each version, and display.

Extensions

Hold a "Keith Haring Art Exhibit", including the children's art and the mind map with facts, for a neighbouring class, or send the "Art Gallery" to a local retirement home or hospital to be enjoyed by others.
