Using Haring's Subway Drawings as a starting point, this exciting lesson offers an innovative way to create a spontaneous work process that students will love.

Procedure

CLASS 1
Watch video (Drawing the Line: A Portrait of Keith Haring). Take notes and be sure to include information on subway drawings, arrest, social conscious, aesthetic (simple and bold designs), symbols, process (no preliminary sketches). Draw 3-6 pictures from video.

CLASS 2
Tables turned on their sides with black paper saddled over them, students are given white chalk and are to enter class by the teacher telling them they are entering the New York subway and the black paper are vacant billboards. They are to draw symbols in Haring's style.

CLASS 3
Demonstrate oil pastel technique:
Draw simple symbol
Color WHOLE paper with oil pastels. DO NOT USE BLACK UNTIL LAST!
Blend seams
Outline all in black
Smear black outline

CLASS 4
Finish project by mounting on paper
