Design a painting composition using the linear style of Keith Haring to create figures showing movement and how they bend. Keith Haring?s clean, simple, linear style will be assimilated as well as the use of his bright colors as students discuss the human body?s joints enabling movement.

Design a painting composition using the linear style of Keith Haring to create figures showing movement and how they bend. Keith Haring?s clean, simple, linear style will be assimilated as well as the use of his bright colors as students discuss the human body?s joints enabling movement.

Cognitive

Apply knowledge from science classes and life experience to determine where and how a body bends for movement or body joints and action lines show movement in the human figure.

Affective

Enhance and validate their knowledge of the human body movement as they apply this knowledge through drawings for their paintings.

Materials

Pencils, erasers, black markers, rulers 12" x 18" white drawing paper, tracing paper, tempera paints, brushes, scissors.

Pre-made stamps, stencils, marker drawings only.

Procedure

Presentation

Show Keith Haring visuals- discussion, Video- "Drawing the Line"- discussion of real life stories. Connection, brainstorming ideas for figures showing movement. Wiggle and move ankle, knee, hips, waist, etc. Ask students to move to music then freeze and stop movement in their own bodies.

Psychometric

Sketch ideas for painting, cut out templates and transfer images to paper. Paint and draw with markers to complete the project.

Extensions

Closure

Review new terms and display their artwork and may share ideas with the class.

Evaluation

Were students able to communicate movement with linear figures? Did students enjoy and learn from this project? Adaptions

Printmaking, drawing, sculpture, murals, language arts- written story to go with artwork.
