Subject: Drawing

Description

A lesson that focuses on pattern and design through line and color. The teacher, a fellow Haring fan, used many of the images on our site to inspire her students. The finished products were photographed and made into a book.

Objective

The students will create an original artwork using color, shape, line, and pattern.

Resources

I used Haring images from webshots.com that I downloaded to display on my TV when the kids walked in the art room as a focus. I also downloaded the Haring Morph screensaver as an additional focus. It is nice to have a computer with Internet access that is hooked up to a TV.

Materials

Markers
Black permanent markers
Pencils
White paper cut 11x11
Black paper to mount on cut 12x12

Procedure

Show the students various artworks by Haring by viewing the web site www.HaringKids.com.
On www.haring.com, there is a special section called "Haring All Over" under the ART section. View selected works that are appropriate with your students.
Discuss the colors in the background and the black lines on the top of the colored background.
First use all colors of markers (except black) to create a pattern or just random splotches of color. Cover your whole paper and don't leave any white.
Take a permanent black marker and create an original line design or Haring like figures on top of the background. Make sure that your whole picture is covered with "Haring All Over".
When they finish, have them mount or matte their art on the black 12x12 paper.
On the back of the art on a small piece of paper write a couple of sentences about what you have learned about Keith Haring, his art or about your artwork. Then glue it to the back or attach it to the bottom of the matte so everyone can see.

Extensions

I used a digital camera and took photos of random student art. Then I created a Power Point presentation and inserted each photo. I printed out each slide from the Power Point, laminated it and bound it to make a book!
