Description
This is a one hour class which covers information about the artist, his artistic style, samples of his art, then concludes with the children creating a piece of artwork in the same vein as the artist. This class was prepared for 3rd graders.
Objective
We covered four objectives in an hour:
1) Learn about Keith Haring's life
2) Learn about his artistic style (pop art)
3) View a sampling of Haring's art
4) Create an inspirational poster based on Haring's style
Resources
1) Masterpiece Art provided the artwork
2) Additional information about Haring's life, artistic style, and additional samples of his work were gathered through www.haringkids.com
3) I gathered the Sunday comics, a Micky Mouse and Dr. Seuss book as examples of artwork that Haring enjoyed
Materials
- heavy posterboard
- thick black markers
- posterboard paint in bright colors
- paint brushes
- lots of paper towels for clean-up
Procedure
I began the class with a Peanuts cartoon displayed on an overhead. I asked the class what their favorite cartoon was. We shared favorites, which led to talking about Haring's favorite cartoons. I shared how Haring wanted his art to be for everyone and talked about his subway art, pop art shop, and his social messages.
Questions
We looked at an untitled piece of Haring's art and I asked:
1) What colors do you notice first?
2) How do the colors make you feel?
3) Do the colors get along?
4) Is this picture quiet or noisy?
5) Is this picture could make a sound, what would it be?
6) Is there movement? Descibe.
7) What would you title this picture?
Extensions
I asked class to create an inspirational poster. Think of a word. Some examples are family, friends, love, learning, teamwork, peace, freedom, read. Write the word on the poster in large letters with a black marker. Use the marker to draw a cartoon using bold lines to depict the word. Use bright poster paint to color in the picture. As a bonus, sign your name using a symbol, similar the Haring's "radiant baby."
